Mini-Renovation

1 May 2021

I spent about six weeks working seven days a week to get our old house ready for some new tenants. I did mostly cleaning, finish carpentry, and painting. I didn’t get it all done, of course, since that house will never be done, but made a ton of progress. Here are a few pics.

Even though this house is old and requires a lot of ongoing maintenance, I love it. After living in it for 20+ years and raising our kids there, it feels like home to me. And the yard has lots of space for gardening and chickens, which our current home doesn’t.

I brought up the idea of moving back after the kids are out of the nest (five years at most), and the wife was not opposed to it. We’ll see.

Freshly-painted kitchen cabinets and backsplash. The backsplash is made out of cheap vinyl tiles.
Basketball schedule uncovered during renovation.
Our Vogelzang Durango and wood box (wood box later removed). Love this stove. We’ve told the tenants not to use it because we’re not insured for it, and there won’t be much occasion to use it before October. If we’re still renting at that time, we’ll have to remove the stove as well, and maybe replace it with a fake electric stove.

Too Busy

6 July 2019

What keeps us too busy? Our jobs, our lives, taking the kids to soccer practice, making money to buy all the extras in life that we think we need. Making money is behind most things that we do, that and preparing our children to follow in our footsteps.

Is it a conspiracy? Sort of. I don’t think that some secret group sat down and decided to make us all wage-slaves by addicting us to the pleasures of the consumer culture. But employees who are not too aware of the evil things done on their behalf around the world are preferable to employees who are politically active and take the time to understand the consequences of their actions. Citizens who are satisfied by consumerism are preferable (from the perspective of the government) to citizens who are asking if there is more to life than the culture of consumption and making enough money to pay for it.

Too many of us are…

  • Too focused on career and family to think about our place in the world, what our country stands for, what our country is doing so we can enjoy cheap gas and cheap food.
  • Too busy to think about where our food comes from.
  • Too busy to make good food choices.
  • Too busy to learn the difference between good food and bad food.
  • Too busy to learn that the food choices we make affect the way other people live in other parts of the world and the whole world’s environment.
  • Too busy to care that watching mainstream news for 30 minutes does not make you well-informed.

I confess that I’ve rarely been that busy. I’ve always taken time when I wanted to and never been obsessed with winning the rat race…or even entering the rat race. If I had, I would have accomplished much more than I have in common cultural terms.

Of course I’m busy now, with two kids and a full-time job and getting ready to be poor.

Ancestry

9 April 2015

All our ancestors lived to deliver us here. They worked and they fought and they did their best through the centuries, through the millennia, to survive and prosper enough to bring at least one child into the world and they gave that child a start in life that was good enough for them to eventually have a child of their own.

Our ancestors and all their efforts to help another generation survive resulted in us: we didn’t spring into existence out of nowhere. None of us can take credit for our existence and none of us can escape the debt owed to those who came before. We pay it back by recognizing that long line of people behind our existence, by living in a way that respects them and the sacrifices they made, and, if we have kids, by giving another generation the best start we possibly can.

Cats and Dog

30 June 2012

We brought our new puppy home on 5/26/2012. Our five cats took one look and 4 of the 5 took off, but they’ve been gradually working their way back home since then.

Last night, M managed to befriend the one remaining holdout in the back yard. She carried him inside and put him in the boys’ bedroom, where he used to sleep.

That was one happy cat. I went in and petted him and he was so happy. It was just like he’d never left.

He’s gone again now, of course, but I think he’ll be back.

Trail Running

2 May 2011

The whole family went for about an hour-long walk to Madison School Forest yesterday afternoon. For the first two thirds of the walk, G and D were spontaneously running ahead on the trail through the woods. Nobody told them to do it, nobody suggested it. It was awesome to glimpse them through the trees, running. It made me feel good about them and optimistic about their future.

And maybe we’ll get to do it together some day.
